Broccoli
The name 'Broccoli' comes from the Italian word 'Brocco' which means branch or arm. Broccoli is the flowering head of the plant, if you leave Broccoli in the fridge too long you will see the green buds turn into yellow flowers. The Broccoli tastes better if you eat it before it does this.
People in the United States are eating 900% more Broccoli now than they did 20 years ago. In 1970 the average consumption of Broccoli was half a pound, in a recent survey (1997) the average consumption was found to be four and half pounds.
Broccoli has been around for 2000 years, it was a favourite food of the romans and introduced into France in the 1500s and into England in 1720.
90% of the Broccoli grown in the United States in 1998 comes from
California.
