Burgle Fixing, posted on Wed Oct 9 16:01:34 2024

This past weekend, many bug fixes, improvements and alterations were made to the Thieves Guild (and more). Here are some of the most noteworthy changes:

*Several previously-runtiming rooms relating to the Thieves' Guild punishment system have been fixed to no longer runtime. If you have been relying on this issue to avoid being thrown into a pit for being naughty, please be aware that this strategy will no longer work.

* Thieves' Guild heavies will no longer take living things (such as pets) from your inventory (but they _will_ take items from the inventories of those living things). Moreover, they will no longer empty all your liquids out of their containers.

*The grace period for thieves to pay fines after the start of a new quota period has been extended to one Roundworld hour of playing time. If you pay your fines within this period, you should not be heavied. But please note that the code that runs all of this is ancient and gnarly, and although we've tested it to the best of our ability, we advise you to remain cautious until you are sure it's working as intended. If you see anything happen that you think is _not_ as intended, please make a bugrep.

*The quota rollover notification message has been changed slightly to become more informative. If you have fines to pay, you will now see "A shadowy character sneaks up beside you, makes some marks in a leatherbound ledger and slips silently away, shaking their head in disappointment." If you have no fines to pay, you will see the same message as before this change (i.e. no signs of disappointment).

Since there has been some confusion expressed on this point: please note that the "shadowy character" message indicates the precise point at which your quota is rolling over. The rollover may be occurring slightly later than you'd expected, since it is not checked for continuously (and sometimes it will be triggered by you checking your quota, since that makes the system check whether a rollover is due), but it does happen at the same time as the message is printed.

*The Thief GM, AGM, and Monitor wardrobes have had a small upgrade - you can now count and look at the things inside them.

*Thieves' Cant and Grunt are no longer whisperable. Fences who used to whisper to thieves in Cant rather than their local language will now whisper in the local language instead. If you are a thief who would like to communicate with a fence in Cant, you will find that you have new optional syntaxes for doing so - but bear in mind that your communications will be visible to other thieves in the room.

*Kordane has become more discerning in allowing new Thieves to get their AM Thieves' License; he will now only grant them to Thieves who have at least learned 'snatch'.

*When someone without a license snatches in Ankh Morpork, Thieves' Guild Heavies previously turned up at the scene of the crime, from which the thief had already fled. They've finally learned that this is sub-optimal and will now head for the thief's destination instead.
