(Answer) (Category) Discworld Faq-O-Matic : (Category) Getting Around. :
I am in some sort of big field/forest/mountain area and it seems to go on forever. Any help?
It sounds like you have found one of our 'terrains'. These are huge expanses of rooms with very little in. They fill the gaps between our major cities. They can be frustrating and rather easy to get lost in! Sometimes they have wild and dangerous inhabitants, so it's probably best not to wander too far unless you're sure you can handle yourself. Don't forget that if you want to get back to safety, you can use the 'godmother' command.

The most useful command in the terrains is probably 'map'. This gives you a representation of what you can see in your immediate surroundings. You can then use the 'walk' or 'journey' commands to move around the terrain. These methods are explained in help terrain_room. Basically, journey lets you move multiple rooms at once, whereas walking will move you only one. You can change whether you walk or journey by default by using the 'options' command.

There are different types of terrain representing different types of ground. For example, you may have a forest, asea with lots of underwater rooms or a huge plain with nothing growing on it but cabbages.

If you're lost but you don't want to use 'godmother', you could ask a witch to fly to you and help you get out. As magic users, some witches are able to use the wizards portal spell to transport other players around.

If you do ask a witch for help, be sure to be extremely polite and penitent. While many witches will be glad to help, some may resent the implication that they live to serve. In either case, you catch more flies with honey than with vinegar.
